Last week at SIHH 2010, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced two new Memovox automatic alarm watches. The Master Memovox and Master Memovox International. In 1956, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the first automatic alarm movement, powered by Calibre 815. The latest generation of JLC’s automatic alarm movement , Calibre 956, is based on this famous movement. The latest generation movement, however, is more accurate, reliable and robust. It now has a large free-sprung balance and a winding rotor on ceramic ball bearings that need no lubrication or maintenance. Its gear wheels have a new kind of tooth profile that ensures smoother transmission. Calibre 956 has a frequency of 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 45 hours. Finally, it is equipped with a rapid date-change mechanism.

As a design element, the month and day disks, connected to the watch’s rotation mechanism, suggest the movement of heavenly bodies.

The result is the creation of a unique world, and a model that marks the debut of a totally new Eco-Drive.

The Calendrier watches have a power reserve of 6 months, a sapphire glass and a water resistance of 10 bar. The recommended retail price for the metal version is 399,00 Euro and for the leather version 350,00 Euro. (Citizen press)

I’ll keep this short and intentionally vague. Suffice to say, I was at an AD and decided to purchase a new Turn-o-graph. The sales rep took the watch to the back to size it. It needed one link removed. Several (maybe 15) minutes later, returned to say that I’ll have to come back Monday, the screws were locktighted too tight and couldn’t be removed. I asked if the screw got buggered up. Yes was the answer. When I looked, not one, but ALL of the screws were mangled. I guess when one wouldn’t come out another was tried until they gave up (ran out of screws actually).

I got sick to my stomach. They said they’d send it to their benchman and have them use an electric screwdriver to remove them. Promised me new screws and that the watch wouldn’t be scratched, and that I could pick it up on Monday. I left and just felt awful. A purchase of a $6775 watch should be perfect. They should have the proper skills and tools to take a link out with NO problems whatsoever. I knew I’d never feel right about it. I called and told them I would not be in on Monday to complete the sale.

The person was very nice and I feel bad. I just cannot change the way I feel. The only stinker is that they had me put my name on the warantee card. They’ll have to send for a new one I guess. I really wanted that watch. I was very excited. Now I’m sad, disgusted.

Thoughts? Am I too anal? Do you think they used the wrong tool? Is Rolex over tightening their screws?

(Don鈥檛 believe) the PVD hype - Wristwatch

Authentic tool watches and military watches are getting more and more attention these days. Not only old military Rolexes and vintage Benrus watches for example,聽 but also the more modern pieces by brands like Marathon and CWC are popular. Many of these watches have a matte black finish to the steel. This color is created not by paint but by physical powder deposition (PVD). Part of this demand for rugged (looking) tool watches is the interest in the old stories and adventurous values behind them. It is the story of a watch being 鈥渋ssued鈥?to the military, complying with certain 鈥渟pecs鈥? being used in combat or the choice of a certain commando unit for the watch. Many of these stories are genuine and interesting developments that stem from a 鈥渇orm follows function鈥?design. Great examples are the watches Panerai developed for marine frogmen in the 1930鈥檚 with the protective lever or the Rolex Submariner in the 1950鈥檚 that soon qualified as the no. 1 choice for diving.

The demand for tool watches happens to be a very profitable business. And demand creates is own supply. The watch industry responds with a wide range of matte steel or PVD products from the oversized U-boats, over to square-headed Bell and Rosses, to limited edition blackened Rolex Sea-Dwellers: no matter what, anything seems to sell and get applause these days. There is nothing wrong with these products, but in my view only the watches that had or have a real functional purpose and a clear cut design will survive the test of time. They are recognized by a real history, a refreshing simplicity and a design that pleases the eye without being invented to please. The rest of the pack won鈥檛 survive in terms of lasting appreciation or a economic value. The merits of a watch are a matter of personal taste, but my advise would be: Don鈥檛 believe the PVD hype.
